Research

My research aims to reassess the relationship between psychoanalysis and modernism by exploring the qualities of literary modernism expressed in the works of Sigmund Freud. Focusing upon the depiction of character, I will examine Freud’s use of literary devices such as language, form, and modes of narrative. I will compare this with the ways in which such techniques are employed by established modernist writers, such as Henry James, Dorothy Richardson, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce, in their own attempts to capture character. By highlighting the similarities between the psychoanalytic and fictional/poetic texts, I argue that Freud too can be viewed as a modernist author.
