Collecting the Eighteenth Century at Winchester College
Supervisors: Dr Valerie Rumbold, Dr Kate Rumbold and Dr Geoff Day (Fellows' and Eccles Librarian, Winchester College)
My research investigates the formation and dispersal of the private library of Alexander Thistlethwayte, a Hampshire gentleman who donated over one thousand books to Winchester College in 1768.
My thesis will be the first extended study of this donation, the collecting practices of its donor, and a selection of its most outstanding contents. These include part of the printer's copy for Lewis Theobald's 1733 edition of Shakespeare, and a copy of James VI and I's Essayes of a Prentise, in the Divine Art of Poesie (1584) with additional manuscript poems by the king and an unidentified courtier.
The project is funded by a three-year AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award and is due to be completed in 2013.
