The fear-inspiring quizmaster of daunted Newsnight guest politicians and cowering University Challenge teams alike, Jeremy Paxman, brought his rugged curiosity to the university's Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon on 15 October.

The beautiful late Elizabethan building which houses the Institute, Mason Croft, was once the home of novelist and architectural conservationist Marie Corelli, about whose less than patriotic conduct during World War One Paxman and a BBC crew were filming a documentary.

In between takes, Mr Paxman passed on extensive tips to the Institute's director Michael Dobson about how Birmingham might best improve its performance in University Challenge, and the two discussed their favourite Hamlets, with the RSC's David Tennant and David Warner gaining especially high scores.
