Here are a number of questions frequently asked by visitors planning to attend our open days.
Do I have to book to attend an open day?
Yes. All visitors should register for an open day in advance. The next open days will be on 26 & 27 June 2015.
Will I receive confirmation of my booking?
Yes. Within 24 hours of registering for an open day you will receive a confirmation email giving additional programme information and travel advice. If you do not receive a confirmation email please ensure that you have entered all details correctly in your VIP web page, it might also be useful to check your ‘junk’ or ‘spam’ folders. Do I need to register on the day?
All visitors are required to register their attendance on the day. During the week of your open day visit, you will receive an email from us with your own personalised event ticket. The ticket will include a QR code which we will use to register your attendance on the day. When you receive your event ticket via email please print it off and bring it with you to the University of Birmingham open day. When you arrive on campus, please visit one of our registration/information points and hand in your event ticket. On receipt of your registration you will receive a University of Birmingham bag. If you need to rush off to your first event/activity when you arrive at the open day, don’t worry, you can register when you have a spare 5 minutes. Do I need to inform the University of changes to my booking?
Yes. Amendments to your booking details, such as cancelling your registration or changing to an alternative day, can be made online via your VIP web page. Simply select ‘register for an open day’ and choose the open day options available. Any questions about this please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Will I receive a programme or other information before an open day?
All information is sent via email and you will not receive any communications through the post. In addition to an email confirming your registration you will receive an email with a link to download the online programme and a further email a few days before the open day. This will contain essential pre-arrival information regarding travel information and advice on making the most of your day. Your event ticket to register on the day will be emailed to you the week of the open day. Please refer to the below section; Do I need to register on the day?
Where can I get a programme?
On the day, printed programmes will be available from Information Booths and the Aston Webb Building (Building R6 on the map).
Can I bring family and friends?
Yes; everyone is welcome to attend. However, we do ask that you let us know how many guests you intend to bring when completing the registration form. If you wish to amend the number of guests you are bringing with you at any time this can be done online via your VIP web page. Simply select ‘register for an open day’ and choose the open day options available.
How do I get to the University of Birmingham?
The University is located in Edgbaston, south of the city centre. Details of how to reach the University, by car and public transport, can be found at the following web page:

Where can I park and how much is it?
We strongly recommend, where possible, for visitors to use public transport to reach the University. The high number of visitors to open day means that the University is only able to offer a limited number of spaces on these days and we cannot guarantee a parking space for visitors. Do I need to book to attend a talk?
No. Places for talks are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Although parents and family are welcome to come to the open days, we cannot guarantee a place for them in subject talks. When there is a high demand for a particular talk, applicants will be given priority. In the event that parents and other guests are not able to attend a talk there are many other alternative activities listed in the programme.
How long do talks last?
Talks are scheduled throughout the day in 45 minute intervals (9.45am, 10.30am, 11.15am, 12noon, 12.45pm, 1.30pm, 2.15pm and 3.00pm). All talks last approximately 30 minutes which allows you 15 minutes to move between talks.
Can I attend more than one subject talk?
Yes. Many visitors will be interested in more than one subject and it is entirely up to you which talks you attend. Talks often take place more than once during the day so it is possible to do this. However, please check the programme beforehand to ensure you plan your day to allow this to happen. If it is not possible to attend talks for all the subjects you are interested in, staff and students will be available to answer questions throughout the day.
Can we see the student accommodation?
Yes. Accommodation tours run throughout the day (9.00am - 3.15pm) and allow you view a selection of accommodation sites at the Vale Village (Maple Bank, Shackleton and Mason). Visitors can either use the walking map to reach accommodation (this takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes) or there is a specially provided free bus service.
Can I go on a campus tour?
Yes. Guided walking tours of the main campus take place throughout the day, lasting between 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Do you have disabled access?
We encourage students with disabilities to visit and study at the University and have implemented a programme of accessibility adaptations on campus. All new buildings and major conversions are being designed with accessibility in mind. A mobility map giving an overview of the Edgbaston campus showing the main access routes for wheelchair users is available on the day.

Where can I stay overnight?
You can book accommodation in the University’s own Conference Park hotel, with the added benefit that hotel guests get free parking. You can book a room in our hotel online. We are the closest hotel in Birmingham to the University and the student accommodation – literally a 5 minute walk from each.
Alternatively, there is a wide selection of hotels in the city centre, many of which are listed on the website visitbirmingham.com
What happens if I can’t attend an open day?
If you are unable to attend an open day there are other opportunities to visit the University. We run campus tours every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year and a place can be booked online.
