Our Department of Professional Education consists of over 25 academics involved in teaching, research and knowledge transfer within the field of professional education. The group is focused on national and international agendas in teacher education as well as medical and dental education.
Teaching excellence is a keynote feature of Professional Education. Indeed, both Primary and Secondary ITE routes were rated as ‘Outstanding’ in the 2011 OFSTED inspection. The Department incorporates members who are engaged in highly-regarded Initial Teacher Education programmes. The primary specialism offers both general and early years training resulting in the Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Education (PGCE Advanced) whilst the Secondary specialism is available in 11 subjects leading towards a PGDipEd (QTS).
Additionally, Department members make a significant contribution to the Undergraduate Studies, Research Training and the Professional Development programmes, including the Masters and Doctoral programmes. The Department hosts many postgraduate research students undertaking a PhD as well as those students retuning to take a MEd in Teaching Studies after their teacher training year with us.
Within the Department, research is funded by a wide variety of high profile agencies such as the the Wellcome Trust and the John Templeton Foundation. The Department hosts the The Jubilee Centre for Character and Values, a new university research centre which was launched on 16th May 20012 at the House of Lords, and the Centre for Research in Medical and Dental Education (CRMDE) which was established in 2000 as a partnership between the NHS West Midlands workforce Deanery and the School of Education, Birmingham. CRMDE members have been involved in several large research projects, some of which have recently been completed with findings disseminated at national and international conferences.
