AIESEP-University of Birmingham Specialist Research Seminar 2012

‘Sport & Exercise Pedagogy’: Defining the Field

Thursday 29th March (12.00 pm) to Saturday 31st March 2012 (12.00 pm), University of Birmingham.

This event is an AIESEP Specialist Research Seminar. A Specialist Research Seminar is a meeting of experts with an interest in tackling questions or issues related to a specific research topic. The Seminar is limited to 50 participants, and it takes the form of short expert inputs followed by working groups.

Purpose

The purpose of the Seminar is to produce a position statement on the topic which is published and made available to the wider academic community on the AIESEP website. It is anticipated that this position statement will lead to further debate on the development of the field of Sport & Exercise Pedagogy and its role in the preparation of teachers, coaches and other sport/exercise professionals. Dissemination to other interested academic communities is also planned.

Key questions to be addressed in this Seminar

  • What is ‘Sport & Exercise Pedagogy’…or what could it be...and how does it articulate with its key intellectual communities?
  • How can Sport & Exercise Pedagogy be strengthened as a (sub) discipline at university level?
  • How can Sport & Exercise Pedagogy underpin the professionalism of teachers, coaches and other physical activity professionals?
  • What are the most pressing questions to be addressed by Sport & Exercise Pedagogy researchers over the next ten years?

Participants

This is a two-day scientific research seminar organised around short lead lectures and working groups. Its purpose is to produce an agreed report on the potential of developing 'Sport and Exercise Pedagogy' as a (sub) discipline of Sport & Exercise Sciences. It will be of interest to academics and researchers working in those academic fields where sport and education meet: physical education, sport coaching, sport pedagogy, human movement, physical activity/health/exercise, and kinesiology.

Background and working definitions

As a working definition, Sport & Exercise Pedagogy can be defined as the interdisciplinary study and development of that complex and crowded space where sport, exercise/physical activity, and education come together in practice. It links sport practice, sport & exercise sciences, and education in the interests of individual learners in sport and physical activity across the life course.

The challenge for the specialist seminar

It is argued, as a starting point, that ‘Sport & Exercise Pedagogy’ has the potential to cross the traditional and sometimes rigid borders between physical education and sport; coaching and teaching; sport, health and education policy; and sport sciences and education. In so doing, it is argued that Sport & Exercise Pedagogy could serve society better than our current knowledge that tends to be located in disciplinary silos.

Organisation

The seminar will be held in the conference facilities of the University of Birmingham. Accommodation and all meals and refreshments are included in the registration fee (The price is £285 per person inclusive of registration, all meals and refreshments and accommodation for two nights).

Prior to the seminar, pre-reading will be distributed. The seminar will start at 12.00 pm on Thursday 29th March and end at 12.00 pm on Saturday 31st March.

Outcome

The outcome from the seminar will be position statement on the potential of developing further the(sub) discipline of Sport & Exercise Pedagogy. Conceptual, research, professional and practical issues will be addressed. NB all seminar participants will be identified as authors of the position statement.

There will be a maximum of 50 participants
