5.00 - The View from the Principal’s Office

Beginning with one iconic image by the famous American painter Norman Rockwell, Kate Rousmaniere examines the image as a representation of the work of the elementary school principal in the United States in the mid- 20th century. The analysis then expands to a framework for understanding how school organization changed in this time period, and its impact on educators who worked in schools and children who attended those schools

Jessica Gerrard is a McKenzie Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Her research interests centre on the relationship of education to social change and politics. Her research works across the disciplines of sociology and history, and has a strong theoretical focus. She completed her doctorate at the University of Cambridge on the histories of the Socialist Sunday Schools and Black Supplementary Schools in 2011 and is now leading a three-year study into practices of learning and labour for vendors of homeless street press.

Professor Kate Rousmaniere, Department of Educational Leadership at Miami University, Oxford Ohio, is the past president of the American History of Education Society (2005-2006) and of the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (2009-2012). She has published widely in the history of American education, specializing in the history of teachers, school principals, and teacher unions. Professor Rousmaniere also conducts work in the areas of biography, historical methodology, (with Ian Grosvenor), feminist history, labor history, the history of higher education, and the history of disabilities.
