The first accolade of this kind, the Jubilee Awards for Service launched this spring to recognise outstanding service in the public sector. Led by the University of Birmingham Jubilee Centre for Character and Values, nominations are now open for the prestigious awards.

To be announced at the House of Lords on July 25 2013 the awards seek to highlight the outstanding work of Britain’s often unsung heroes in the public sector and will recognise and reward public sector workers for exceptional service; those who commit their working life to others and who regularly go beyond their usual duties.

From doctors, nurses, police and fire officers to teachers and environmental services, the Jubilee Centre asks for nominations to recognise outstanding candidates from across the sector.

The Jubilee Centre for Character and Values is the first UK centre dedicated to research into the character, values and virtues that shape UK society. The over-arching aim of the new centre, which is supported by the John Templeton Foundation, is to contribute to the renewal of character and values in Britain through research and development activities. The public service awards are designed to support these aims and ensure that character and virtues remain at the heart of public debate.

Professor James Arthur, Head of the School of Education and Director of the Jubilee Centre for Character and Value said: ‘These awards are an important acknowledgement of public sector workers. The awards will be presented in the House of Lords and we hope to recognise some really inspirational people.’
