Parents who want to find out more about the new University of Birmingham School, and how to apply for a place for their child are invited to two information events near the site of the new school in Selly Oak.

The School will open in September 2015 to year 7 and year 12 pupils, and the forthcoming events are a chance for parents of children who will be heading into year 7 in 2015 to hear about the educational vision of the School and details of the admissions process and criteria.

The events will be held on Monday 7 July and Wednesday 9 July and will start at 19:00.  They will be held at the Orchard Learning Resource Centre, Hamilton Drive, Weoley Park Rd, Selly Oak, Birmingham, B29 6QW.

The events are a chance for parents to hear about the educational vision of the School, the progress being made with the development of the curriculum, the extended school day and the links being planned with the University of Birmingham together with details of the admissions process and criteria for entry.

The School Principal, Michael Roden (formerly headteacher of King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys in Birmingham), who took up his position in April this year, will present information and respond to questions from parents.

The events are expected to be popular, and with limited places, anyone interested in attending is asked to register by email, stating their preferred date and number of people who would like to attend. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

There will be separate events in the autumn for students heading into year 12 and their parents to find out more about the sixth form and its admissions process.

There will also be further events for year 7 entry in the autumn at both the University sites and locations across the city. The Principal will also be present to talk to prospective parents and pupils at the University’s annual Community Day on September 7.

Anyone who cannot make the July events or would like an update on the School following the summer should email to be added to the mailing list or visit the School's website to register their details.

Mr Roden said: “I will be delighted to meet parents who are interested in finding out more about the University of Birmingham School as well as the practicalities of how to apply for places at our pioneering institution.”

The School will be a free, mixed ability, co-educational state school for students aged 11-16, with a broad, academic sixth form. There will be no entrance exams for admissions to Year 7 and pupils will be admitted without consideration of religion, ability, disability, or social or financial background. Students with special educational needs (SEN) will benefit from the University’s expertise in SEN education and all pupils will benefit from access to University facilities.

The School will take 50 per cent of its pupils in the 11-16 School from Selly Oak – with the remainder coming from three ‘nodes’ across the city – Hall Green, Small Heath and Jewellery Quarter. It will grow to its full capacity of 1,150 pupils in five years.
