Ian completed his PhD in psychology in 1987; then taught in secondary schools in various roles including ICT co-ordinator, head of science and senior teacher. He is currently a Lecturer and leads the Education for Health Professionals programme. In addition he teaches quantitative methods including factor analysis and provides a statistical advice service for the school. Much of his time is devoted to externally funded research.

Postgraduate supervision

Ian has the following research interests:

Learning and teaching science in secondary schools. Pedagogy, particularly related to learning study and conceptual change.
Education of doctors and other health professionals.

PhD opportunities


Most of his research is based in the Centre for Research in Medical and Dental Education (CRMDE) on projects relating to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education of health professionals. In addition, he is the trial coordinator for two projects linked with The Jubilee Centre for Character and Values.

Ian has been involved in researching pupil attainment, out-of-school educational provision and experiences of disabled students. Since 2004, he has been the lead researcher for eight projects (226k); and has been involved in a further 18 projects (£1.5m), principally for data analysis. Although specializing in quantitative analysis, he has experience in all aspects of research including project management and design.
