About

Jane has a background in teaching in early years and special education. She was an Educational Psychologist from 1993 until she retired from Local Authority practice in 2011. She continues to do some locum work for a Midlands local authority. She is a Health Professions Council Registered Practitoner Psychologist and a Chartered Educational Psychologist.

Biography

Jane trained as a teacher in the 1970s and worked in a number of Birmingham schools for 14 years. Her main teaching experience was in Primary and Special Education. After 5 years teaching in mainstream Primary schools she moved to special education where she held posts of responsibility for music and RE. She then moved back to mainstream education as a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator. Her final post was Assessment Co-ordinator and acting deputy head teacher before training as an Educational Psychologist (EP). Jane worked in three Midlands Local Authorities as an EP until her retirement in July 2011. Her final post was a specialist senior EP for Research and Development.

Teaching

Teaching is delivered to the postgraduate training programme in educational psychology in areas such as:

  • Dynamic Assessment and the Cognitive Abilities Profile;
  • British Psychological Society Certificate of Competence in Educational Testing;
  • Early years;
  • Early reading development and reading difficulties;
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy;
  • Non aversive approaches to the management of challenging behaviour;
  • Case study approaches to research; and
  • Critical reading/academic writing.

Postgraduate supervision

I supervise students undertaking research related to the broad domain of educational psychology practice. Some research supervision is related to my research interets listed in the next section. 

Research

Her research interests are as follows:

  • Educational psychology practice, particularly related to assessment and intervention. Jane recently completed a small scale action research project about consultation in her Local Authority;
  • Dynamic Assessment/Cognitive Education programmes;
  • Early years; and
  • Early literacy development/literacy difficulties.

Other activities

  • External examiner for Open University course: Supporting Learning in Primary Schools (aimed at Teaching Assistants)
  • Member of the British Psychological Society Education Verifier’s Group
