Industrial placements

Students who have gained practical work experience through a year-long industrial placement or vacation work have significant advantages in terms of maturity, career development/expectations and recognising the relevance of academic study to real-life situations.

Every year, companies from all sectors of engineering in the UK including large multi-nationals and small business enterprises offer placement opportunities, so finding something suitable is rarely a problem.  However, some relocation may be required for the duration of the placement depending upon the geographical location of the company chosen.

This site provides a list of current vacancies and attention should be paid to the preferred mode for submission of applications which will generally be in one of three formats:

  • Electronic application forms
  • Application form (hard copy)
  • Curriculum vitae and covering letter.

Students are strongly advised to be familiar with each mode of application process and retain copies of applications made for future use.

If the initial application is successful a student will probably be invited to attend an open, competitive interview and possible Assessment Centre selection process.

Hints and tips regarding all modes of initial applications and interview techniques can be obtained from the Careers Centre on campus.

If a student is successful through all stages of the selection process and is offered a year-long industrial placement they will be registered for the Certificate of Industrial Studies (CIS) by the School of Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Most placements are open to International students as well as UK & EU students (with exception to some vacancies linked to the Defence Industry which may not be available to non-UK passport holders).
