Description

Abstract: You may have wondered why your smartphone battery drains so quickly. This is because power amplifiers in your phone are not very efficient. In mobile networks, power amplifiers consume 50% to 80% of the overall energy. To meet the ever increasing demand for greater information transmission, these power amplifiers are very linear.

Traditionally, power amplifiers can be either efficient or linear, but not both. Efficiency of the power amplifiers in the smartphones is sacrificed for linearity.

In this talk I will introduce to non-experts the fundamental concepts of power amplifiers, design considerations of power amplifiers for modern digital wireless communication and the trends of power amplifier development. In particular, the design of one power amplifier for digital TV transmission will be described. This amplifier has been tested and will be potentially installed in the broadcasting tower SkyTree in Tokyo.
