Applicant visit days

We strongly encourage our UCAS applicants to visit the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering here at the University of Birmingham in order that they can get a real taste of what it is like to study here.

The Gisbert Kapp building

We invite all offer holders to visit the University on one of our admissions days, to learn more about our courses, to see the excellent facilities in the School and to see the University of Birmingham's beautiful campus. This is also a good opportunity to talk with current students, the Admissions Tutor and other members of academic teaching staff about studying at the University of Birmingham.

The day will also provide you with:

  • Information on careers and what it is like to work in engineering, together with further studies opportunities
  • Information on IET membership and the importance of C.Eng. status
  • Information on obtaining sponsorship and work placements

The admissions day will start at 10:30am in the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering. There will be presentations and a tour of the campus and halls of residence. After lunch, presentations on the degree programmes and on student life, finance and careers and an opportunity to speak to our current students. This is followed by a tour of the building and your interview with a member of academic staff.  The interviews give you a chance to tell us more about yourself and your interests in Electronic, Electrical or Systems Engineering.

Many of our current students have told us that this opportunity to visit the school and have their questions answered was very useful to them in making the difficult choice between universities. We therefore urge you to accept this invitation, and we look forward to meeting you on our admissions day.

During your visit to the School there is a short Maths Skills Test. This gives us a good idea of where your strengths and weaknesses are as a student, which helps with awarding the School Distinguished Award Scholarship and when results are released in judging whether we can make an offer to someone who narrowly misses our offer. In some cases it can also be a condition of offer, or for students who have demonstrated academic excellence and have a strong set of predicated A-level grades, can allow them to secure an Unconditional Offer. An example Maths Skills Test is available as a PDF.
