Social Research Methods

Description

This module builds on from the first year module which will have introduced students to the main stages in the research process and gives students experience in collecting data. This module will go beyond basic issues and skills, particularly in relation to the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. Topics covered include: research design; values, politics and ethics in social research; participatory research methods; doing policy analysis; thematic/narrative/discourse analysis; using SPSS to analyse data including the use of descriptive, inferential and multi-variate statistics; using social media in research; engagement with users of research; and achieving impact. The module will also draw on case studies of research from the most highly skilled researchers in the school to illustrate key points.

Assessment

  • 1,500 word essay : Coursework (40%)
  • 3 hour exam  - Written Unseen (60%)
