Jenny Hopkins, MSc Environmental Health graduate "I was awarded the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Graduate of the Year in 2009, which crowned two challenging yet enjoyable years."
I graduated from the University of Birmingham with an MSc Environmental Health in 2008. I was looking for a career that would allow me to make a difference for the greater good and open up opportunities to work in a varied field of work at home or abroad. Having always been interested in health and hygiene, the role of an Environmental Health Practitioner seemed ideal and in keeping with my science background.
The course at Birmingham offered an excellent grounding in all core areas of Environmental Health from which to develop my professional career. Guest speakers from government organisations and local authorities brought the profession alive through stories and real life examples and I came away with practical experience that I have been able to draw on since working in local government, from assessing housing hazards to auditing food safety systems.
During my MSc, I secured a work-based placement at Reading Borough Council to complete my experiential learning and professional examinations. Throughout my placement, I kept in touch with both staff and peers from the MSc who have provided a great support network along the road to becoming qualified. I was awarded the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Graduate of the Year in 2009, which crowned two challenging yet enjoyable years. I qualified in December 2009 and have continued to work at Reading in the Consumer Protection team.
