Student profile: Alastair Dewar

Geology

I came to Birmingham straight after completing my A-Levels, one of which was Geology. The university was my first choice for a number of reasons, not least the department and the appeal of a lively big city.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the course was the variety of places that were visited on the fieldtrips. In the summer of my second year I went straight from completing my undergraduate mapping project to mud logging for a drilling contractor in Romania. After a short period of training I was able to work shifts on my own, logging and maintaining equipment during the drilling of a production well – quite a responsibility!

After graduating with a 2.2, I completed an MSc in Pollution Control. I am presently working full-time for the Environment Agency as a Technical Officer on a Contaminated Land and Groundwater Team based in the Midlands. This mainly involves work relating to landfill liner and cap construction. My degree has allowed me to follow a line of employment that interests me and has given me an excellent foundation for postgraduate study and workplace training courses.
