'There were numerous opportunities to develop key skills such as confidence, independence and time-management through the different projects and presentations.'
I chose the Environmental Geoscience* programme as it offered me the best choices in geology and physical geography. I liked the idea of being able to choose the modules that I would take and found that the School offered a broad range. I managed to focus my learning on hydrology and coastal environments. The fieldwork was another bonus, especially the environmental field project which enabled me to specialise on coastal processes.
The fieldtrips proved to be a great way to put classroom work into practice. I was sponsored by the Air Force for my final year, which shows that employees rate the School and University highly. There were numerous opportunities to develop key skills such as confidence, independence and time-management through the different projects and presentations that had to be completed. The course was everything I had hoped for and more and put me in good shape to join the Air Force.
In terms of social life the Guild of Students on campus ran regular events that proved very popular. The campus itself is outstanding as all lectures are either in or in close proximity to the department. It was also easy to get to and from my accommodation in nearby Selly Oak, which was a bonus on some mornings!
Birmingham itself has plenty to offer with lots of clubs, restaurants and shops, a definite for anyone looking to enjoy themselves outside of lectures!
*This course is now called Environmental Geology.
