Title of PhD: Unpacking low carbon interventions in India: the implementation gap between climate mitigation and renewable energy policies

Komalirani Yenneti is undertaking doctoral research into ‘Unpacking low carbon interventions in India: the implementation gap in renewable energy and climate mitigation policies’ taking the case of solar energy large scale projects implementation. The research involves using qualitative methodologies to interview policy makers, government organizations, NGOs, business developers and local communities to explore the implementation of renewable energy policies, focusing on the processes and practices that have enabled and hindered the policy effective implementation.

Biography

Komalirani Yenneti is currently a doctoral researcher in School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. Apart from this current position, Komali also holds a position as a Research Associate at the Sustainable Habitat Division, The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI). She is also a member of various international professional bodies including the Royal Geography Society- Institute of British Geographers, American Planning Association, American Architectural Engineering Institute, Royal Institute of British Architecture.

Prior to becoming a doctoral researcher Komalirani had about 3 years of industry experience in the fields of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, energy efficiency and Green buildings where she used her expertise to implement projects. She has written papers at national and international level; one of the most important was a paper in the book submitted to the policy makers at COP-15. She has also presented at various national and international conferences. Recently she has completed two months intensive training at Kitakyushu Urban centre, IGES, Japan on ‘CDM funding viability for decentralized solid waste composting projects in developing countries’. She has also received various awards such as the Vastushilpa foundation gold medal, Hyderabad industries gold medal, W.C Kane memorial peace prize, and Brightest Young climate leader. She also has several grants and scholarships among her achievements.

Research interests

  • Urban and Regional Planning with aspects of Development Plans, Master Plans and Infrastructure Development Plans
  • Screening, Scoping and documentation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process
  • Green buildings and Energy efficient buildings with energy audits, simulations and policy making
  • GHG accounting, reporting and carbon abatement under Clean Development Mechanism
  • Developing Mitigation and adaption strategies for climate change with focus on cities, urban and transportation planning and specialization on Public transport and Civil Aviation sector

Other activities

Komalirani Yenneti is an active volunteer and is at the forefront of advocacy in the field of climate change, associated with Indian Youth Climate Network, Commonwealth Youth Climate Change and Green Peace where she has been participating and organizing various activities and projects. She was an Indian youth delegate for COP-15 climate negotiations with a grant from the University of Technology, Sydney. She organized programmes like 350 Day, Seal the Deal campaign (Initiative of UNEP), Fossil fuel phase out campaign, Stand up-Take action against poverty (Initiative of UN-MDGs) where she had been chief campaigner for organizing several events in the state of Gujarat. She is also a part of Urbanization and Global Environmental Change (UGEC) project which is a collaborative initiative of IHDP-UGEC (Urbanization and Global Environmental Change, an IHDP core project), SARCS (Southeast Asia Regional Committee for START), and National Taipei University. She was also the youngest observer to the CIF partnership forum by The World Bank at ADB HQ, Philippines. She was Doctoral research representative for school of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham (2010-11). She is elected member for the Ethical and Environmental Committee of the University of Birmingham.
