7th Network Conference on Persistent Organic Pollutants

24-25 April 2013

You are invited to participate in the 7th Network Conference on Persistent Organic Pollutants hosted by the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th April 2013.

Venue

The Nicholson Building, Winterbourne Botanic Gardens, University of Birmingham (accommodation at Conference Park, University of Birmingham)

The venue is a 15 minute taxi ride from Birmingham New Street rail terminus, which in turn is a 15 minute train journey from Birmingham International Airport (BHX). Flights to BHX are available from a large number of UK, European, and worldwide cities.

Registration Fee

£325 (early bird full delegate)
£400 (late registration full delegate)
£150 (Student/NGO delegate)

Registration is inclusive of overnight accommodation at the University’s Conference Park on 24th April, all meals and refreshments. Please register as early as possible, as places are limited. The “early-bird” rate is available until 24th January 2013. From 25th January, the registration fee will be £400.

A limited number of places at the discounted rate of £150 for students and NGO representatives are also available. Again you are advised to register for these places as soon as possible.

Conference Format

There will be plenary talks given by leading international figures at the start of the programme for each morning and afternoon. These will be supported by a full programme of oral and poster presentations selected from those submitted.

Confirmed Plenaries are: 

  • Professor Cynthia de Wit, Stockholm University, Sweden – Brominated flame retardants in different Swedish microenvironments - levels, sources and exposure estimates
  • Professor Bert van Bavel – Örebro University, Sweden – Brominated flame retardant and persistent perfluorinated compounds in marine mammals in the Arctic

Call for Papers

The conference is open to all researchers from the UK or overseas. Contributions from young researchers are particularly welcome.

We are seeking contributions that cover all aspects of research into UNEP/UN-ECE POPs, “candidate” POPs, Brominated Flame Retardants, perfluorinated compounds, and related chemicals of concern. View papers from the 6th conference in 2012.

All aspects of research will be considered but key areas are:

  • Human Exposure (trends, pathways, biomarkers, etc.) 
  • Human Health Impacts 
  • Measurement and Modelling of Environmental Levels, Fate and Behaviour 
  • Advances in the Sampling and Measurement of POPs 
  • Ecotoxicology 
  • Formation, Sources, Emission Inventories, and Release Pathways 
  • Regulatory Aspects

Presentations will be selected on the basis of abstracts submitted. Abstracts (prepared in Microsoft Word) should not exceed 400 words in length, and should be submitted via emailing the abstract as Word document to Marian Jordan (m.a.jordan@bham.ac.uk) by no later than 24th January 2013. When submitting, please state whether you would prefer an oral or poster presentation slot.

Social programme

There will be a poster session between 17.00 and 19.00 on 24th April. This will be followed by a Conference Dinner, and drinks (kindly sponsored by SAL Ltd.).
