The School of Government and Society is one of the leading UK and international centres for politics, international relations, international development, sociology, and European studies. The School brings together academic staff, research staff and doctoral students across a number of areas of study within the Social Sciences:
With a population of more than 28,000 students including 4,000 international students from over 150 countries, Birmingham is one of the largest international student communities in the UK. We support International Students by familiarising them with the UK educational system and helping them to develop their academic English.
The School of Government and Society offers a number of exciting and forward thinking undergraduate degree programmes across our departments. Choose to study political science, international relations, sociology or European politics and take the opportunity to examine some of the most important political issues that we as citizens face in the 21st century.
The School of Government and Society offers a wide range of Taught Masters (MA and MSc) programmes, as well as Postgraduate Diplomas, Certificates and other qualifications that can be taken on a full-time, part-time or modular basis. Covering a wide range of subjects including politics, international development, local government studies and East European studies, our taught postgraduate courses are ideal for those wishing to develop a specialism in an area or practitioners looking to further their knowledge and enhance their career prospects. The School also offers distance learning courses in the International Development department.

In the School of Government and Society we offer much more than a degree. As a student here, whether undergraduate or postgraduate, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of events, with some or all of the costs paid for by the School. Some of these are targeted to help you build skills and experience for your CV, others are more open events designed to expose you to high-level speakers on current debates relevant to all Government and Society students.

The School of Government and Society is located in the recently refurbished Muirhead Tower on the University’s main Edgbaston campus, offering state-of-the-art teaching and research study facilities, including free Wi-Fi throughout the building and dedicated study areas for postgraduate research students.
