This podcast was part of the workshop on Somalia: Negotiating the balance between 'African Solutions' and international responses. recently hosted (11th July 2012) by the School of Government and the Institute of Conflict, Cooperation and Security (ICCS).
'AMISOM's Challenges: A Hybrid Solution to an International Problem?'
Professor Paul Williams, George Washington University
This presentation focused on how actors outside the continent have responded to crises in Somalia and particularly their support for AMISOM, outlining the challenges to AMISOM which remain for the most part unresolved. Paul argued that these challenges can be described under 4 themes- military, political, bureaucratic and international.
His presentation suggested that AMISOM represents a hybrid rather than an African solution, highlighting the fact that though military gains have been made a long term political solution that would see a stable and secure Somalia in the future remains elusive.
