BA Sociology and Philosophy (JH)
HR Manager, NHS.
In my final year at university on the Sociology and Philosophy Joint Honours course, I accessed the careers service. I liked the idea of being on a graduate scheme but wasn't sure what career I wanted. The careers service gave me guidance and helped me to narrow my search. I then applied for a number of schemes and was successful in getting onto the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme. The scheme lasted 2 years and during this time I undertook 3 work placements as well as completing education qualifications. This was an excellent platform for getting my current role. I would like to continue to develop my HR expertise and progress within my chosen career.
My advice to anyone considering studying at Birmingham would be to make the most of your time at university by supplementing your degree with other activities. Whilst I was at university, I was involved with Redbrick, had a part-time job and gave talks for both the Philosophy and Sociology department's open days amongst other things. I was able to talk about these experiences and the transferable skills I possessed at interview. I believe that it was ultimately these experiences that helped get me my graduate trainee role.
