On Friday April 19 Dr Adam Quinn of POLSIS convened the first event of the ESRC Seminar Series on 'The Future of American Power', on which he is principal investigator.

This invitation-only one-day seminar, focused on emerging shifts in the global distribution of power and its consequences, was attended by two eminent American scholars of US foreign policy, Professor Barry Posen (MIT) and Professor William Wohlforth (Dartmouth College), as well as representatives of the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office and senior scholars from a number of leading UK institutions, including the London School of Economics, Chatham House, and the University of Warwick.

As well as Dr Adam Quinn, who led discussions on the day, Birmingham was represented by Professor Mark Webber, Professor Nicholas Wheeler and Dr David Dunn, and two doctoral students from POLSIS, Ms Jonna Nyman and Mr Andris Banka. The series will run through 2013-14, with one event being held at each of the participating institutions, finishing with an event at Chatham House in April 2014 and the publication of a Report on American Power synthesising the group's deliberations.
