Mark WebberPrior to coming to Birmingham as Head of School, I was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Professor at Loughborough University.

My abiding memories of CREES while I was a student were:

  • the excitement of intellectual pursuit (I was a student during the Gorbachev period)
  • the hard work but patient tuition (most evident in getting me to a level in Russian language that allowed me to do doctoral research using primary materials)
  • the sense of scholarly tradition and heritage (being taught by Bob Davies, who had collaborated with the late E.H. Carr)
  •  the weather (the Birmingham winters seemed a lot more Siberian than they are now
