Prior to coming to Birmingham as Head of School, I was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Professor at Loughborough University.
My abiding memories of CREES while I was a student were:
the excitement of intellectual pursuit (I was a student during the Gorbachev period)
the hard work but patient tuition (most evident in getting me to a level in Russian language that allowed me to do doctoral research using primary materials)
the sense of scholarly tradition and heritage (being taught by Bob Davies, who had collaborated with the late E.H. Carr)
the weather (the Birmingham winters seemed a lot more Siberian than they are now
