On 28 March 2011 the CREES hosted the Nauruz celebration - Central Asian Spring New Year. The event, which was organised by the University of Birmingham Kazakh Cultural Society, attracted over eighty participants.
Among the guests were Kazakh students from other universities across the Midlands and representatives from the Embassy of Kazakhstan in London. The guests were addressed in Kazakh language by the British and American students studying Kazakh language at CREES. Participants enjoyed traditional Kazakh food, prepared by Dr Zhanabayeva and Kazakh students.
The event was part of activities within the British Council-funded INSPIRE project on Strategic Partnership between the University of Birmingham and the Kazakh-British Technical University, which is run by Dr Yemelianova of the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham and Dr Svetlana Zhanabayeva of the Kazakh-British Technical University (Almaty, Kazakhstan).
