Demonstrating the commitment of University of Birmingham scholars to outreach, Tim Haughton (CREES) delivered a public lecture on the European Union in Des Moines, Iowa.

After highlighting the importance of the EU to an American audience, he examined the challenges facing the EU, highlighting how solidarity, unanimity and vulnerability lie at the core of a correct diagnosis of Europe’s woes, but also how addressing those issues provide a key to a prosperous and successful EU. The lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session in which the impending French elections, the eurozone crisis and the future of transatlantic relations dominated the discussion.
