Dr Deema Kaneff, Reader in Social Anthropology, CREES, was invited to Vienna on the 23rd November in order to present a paper titled 'Strengths and weaknesses of Area Studies curricula – the CREES experience'.

The conference was attended by a number of leading Area Study departments across Europe (from Germany, Finland etc) and was aimed at exchanging and sharing experiences with the University of Vienna. The latter, which established an East European Area Studies Research Centre some 3 years ago, is currently exploring the possibility of expanding activities through setting up a new MA programme focused on eastern Europe.  It was a mutually beneficial event which enabled the strengthening of connections between various East European Area Studies Centres in Europe, and the sharing and exchange of information.
