Former Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Iveta Radicova, delivered a lecture, "The EU Crisis What Next" as part of the Centre for Russian and East European Studies (CREES)'s 50th Anniversary Seminar Series and was held in conjunction with the Graduate Centre for Europe, the European Research Institute and the School of Government and Society.

Student profile: Felix Cairns, International Model NATO Conference 2013

Description
All delegations stayed in the same hotel, so were advised to remain "in-role" throughout the conference. And we found ourselves becoming embroiled in fascinating debates over meals and drinks with some very capable students from universities across America, Canada and Europe. It became evident to me that diplomacy requires a constant engagement in and consideration for major world issues, and that productive discussion can occur anywhere, from the formal debates in the conference, to the less formal encounters in lifts and at the bar!

Student profile: Brami Van Crombrugge, International Model NATO Conference 2013

Description
The general aura that surrounded the ongoing debates in the Defense Planning Group was indescribable. While certain delegates were returning to their 2nd/3rd Model NATO conference, others (such as Felix and I) were experiencing our very first. It was an absolute honour to be part of such an invaluable event and to be able to learn from such a diverse variety of students.

POLSIS MA Study tour visit Brussels, January 2013

Description
Every year all MA students based within POLSIS have the opportunity to take part in an study trip to Brussels. This year, Dr David Bailey and Dr Luis Cabrera led a group of around 30 MA students to Brussels. The study group visited the NATO headquarters, and a number of the European Union institutions (European Parliament, Council (see photo above), and European Commission), and also attended the University's own office based within Brussels.

Professor John Makumbe (1950 - 2013)

Description
Professor John Makumbe died on 24 January aged 63. Professor Makumbe was a member of the Department of Political and Administrative Studies of the University of Zimbabwe. The University of Birmingham awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2004 on the strength of his brave and principled commitment to truth and integrity in Zimbabwe and in Africa more broadly.
