Video: Brigid Jones, Birmingham City Councillor

As a councillor in Birmingham I represent Selly Oak which is a very heavily populated student area. About 1 in 3 of the residents there are students so having lived the student lifestyle there as it were, but also lived the settled lifestyle in that area as well, it's sort of given me a good knowledge of both sides of the community and how I can serve them both.

Particularly in POLSIS we've got an excellent range of academics doing all sorts of different interesting things. We do anything from political economy to international relations to political philosophy and I've really enjoyed the challenge of combining it all together. I think it's given me a really well-rounded experience.

Just remember how much you've been given and how much you know and remember how difficult it was at the beginning for you to understand all those weird concepts and the theories and political views and ideas and how you've managed to translate them and how that will help you in being a voice and an advocate for other people because it's invaluable having people who can speak for other people because not everyone can do that.

I choose to study at IDD mainly because they have Governance and State-building specialisation. They teach a lot about conflict and post-conflict it's one of the best schools for international development in the UK and it's very good for governance and civil servant management and that's what I was looking for so that's why I came here.

What I enjoyed most I guess was first of all studying within a really international range, being able to work with students from all over the world. Also what I really liked about the IDD programme is that it allows you to do the research for your dissertation abroad so it's combined with very hands on field research which was really the deciding point for me why I choose this degree.

Podcast: UK gives aid to Rwanda as Met police warn exiles of assassination threat

Lucy Vernall from the Ideas Lab talks to Dr Danielle Beswick, lecturer in International Development, and Research Associate for the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Great Lakes of Central Africa, about news that the Metropolitan police have warned two Rwandan exiles living in London that they face an "imminent threat" of assassination by the Rwandan government. The men are believed to have been targeted because of criticisms made of President Paul Kagame, and now fear for their lives. The news could prove extremely embarrassing for the Conservative-led coalition, which ploughs millions of pounds of aid into Rwanda, and has continued to cultivate a strong relationship with the country ever since the 1994 genocide.
