I chose to study with CREES, as, since high school, I wanted to do my masters in the UK. The academic culture is excellent here at Birmingham and delivers an enriching perspective and additional life-experience, broadening one’s mind.
Compared to US universities, the University of Birmingham has a straightforward application process and the admissions staff are very helpful.

Studying with CREES, I most enjoy the fact that during one year I can read, write and reflect on a region in a way that would hardly be possible somewhere else. Area studies rock and the modular programme CREES offers is exactly what I was looking for. Studying at CREES enables you to have direct access to experts in the different fields and take as much information as you can with you. Also the small size of the centre has an almost familiar atmosphere that is hard to find in other departments.
Whether I will work for an NGO or for my government remains open. But there is no doubt that studying at CREES helps me to get a demanded specialisation in an area, differentiating me from international studies people for example.
Training and gaining a sense of a holistic approach to a problem is in my eyes an essential skill for a governmental career where questions of politics, economics, culture and even history are often closely intertwined.
The advice I would give to anyone considering studying at CREES is to go for it! And don't be shy to ask questions!
