Raymond Oppong is a Research Fellow at the Health Economics Unit, University of Birmingham.
He is an enthusiastic researcher who is interested in issues such as economic evaluation in the area of muskuloskeletal disease, antimicrobial resistance, quality of life research and economic analysis alongside multinational studies.
He has published in journals such as The European Journal of Health Economics and Applied Research in Quality of Life and has disseminated his work to audiences around Europe.
He is currently undertaking a part-time PhD entitled "Economic analysis alongside multinational studies" at the University of Birmingham.
Before joining the Health Economics Unit, Raymond Oppong qualified with a BA (Hons) in Economics and Geography (first class) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Ghana. He went on to work as a teaching assistant at the Department of Economics and Industrial Management. Kumasi, Ghana.
In 2006, Raymond obtained an MSc in Health Economics and Health Policy from the University of Birmingham. He has since worked as a Research Fellow at the Health Economics Unit.
Raymond currently works in collaboration with the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre at Keele University on a number of trial based and modelling studies within muskuloskeletal disease. He also works on an EU funded project GRACE (Genomics to combat Resistance against Antibiotics in Community LRTI in Europe).
Raymond’s currently conducts health economics research alongside studies undertaken by the Arthritis research UK at Keele University. This forms part of the ongoing collaboration between the health economics unit and Keele University. The studies that he is currently working on includes: Self-Management in Osteoarthritis of the Hand (SMOoth), The Staffordshire Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Back Assessment Study (SAMBA) and the back pain modelling study.
Raymond also works on the EU funded Genomics to combat Resistance against Antibiotics in Community-acquired LRTI in Europe (GRACE) project. He is currently working on two different studies within GRACE. The first is an observational study aimed at exploring the incidence, aetiology, and resistance patterns of bacteria in order to develop an optimal strategy for diagnosing community-acquired LRTI. He has been working on assessing the cost of resistance alongside this study.
The second study consists of two different trials. The first trial is a randomised controlled double blinded trial which is aimed at determining which patients benefit from antibiotic treatment and the second trial is a randomised controlled factorial trial which looks at the effects of a web based GP training intevention on antibiotic prescribing. He has been involved in estimating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the interventions in this study.
As part of the GRACE project, he was also involved in an observational study of the management of patients with acute cough/LRTI. He used various statistical methods to estimate the cost of treating LRTI in 13 European countries, looked at the impact of using different value sets for EQ-5D, assessed the construct validity of EQ-5D in patients with acute cough/lower respiratory tract infections and looked at the cost-effectiveness of point of care C-reactive protein in reducing antibiotic prescribing.
He is currently working on other projects such as the high dependency care (HDC) project, which is aimed at testing the validity of PCCMDS and the HRGs relating to paediatric HDC.
