Helen Gardner is the Programme Director for the BNurs (Hons) Programme. She is also a Lecturer in Child Nursing on this programme.

Helen Gardner qualified in 1977 in general (adult) and children’s nursing at what was then the Queen Elizabeth School of Nursing, Birmingham. After taking some time out to have a family she then developed a career in Intensive Care Nursing of Children at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH), where she was a Sister on the Children’s Intensive Care Unit for many years. Following a spell in Professional Development at BCH and having gained further clinical and academic qualifications she entered the field Higher Education in 2001 as a Lecturer in Child Nursing (Pre-Registration).

Helen also has teaching experience in Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) and Post-Graduate Education, and spent some time in a department providing academic skills development and support for students on a range of both Pre-Registration and LBR programmes. She also has experience in advising prospective LBR students regarding Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning (AP(E)L). She joined the University of Birmingham in July 2008 as part of the team teaching Children’s Nursing on the BNurs (Hons) Programme and has been BNurs Programme Director since September 2009. Helen is also on the Nurse Bank at Acorn’s Children’s Hospice, Worcester, where she works a couple of weekend shifts every month nursing children with life-limiting conditions.

  • Helen teaches pre-registration students in the Child Field of Practice as well as contributing to teaching across the generic aspects of the programme.


PhD awarded by University of Wales October 2012 for research study entitled: Palliative surgical treatment of children with single ventricle anatomy: understanding the experiences of survivors and their families.
