About

Amanda Chapman is a research fellow in health economics, specialising in health technology assessment of medical devices in particular.

Qualifications

  • PhD Health Economics, University of Birmingham, 2013.
  • BSc (Hons) Economics with Spanish, University of Birmingham, 2009.

Biography

Amanda attained her first degree from the University of Birmingham in Economics with Spanish, which included a year at the Universidad de Granada, Spain.  She started her PhD in 2009 within the department of Public Health (Supervisors: Dr Celia Taylor and Mr Alan Girling).  The project was undertaken as part of the MATCH research collaboration (Multidisciplinary Centre of Technology Assessment for Healthcare), and was funded by the EPSRC.

The main focus of Amanda’s PhD was to apply, evaluate, and further develop a framework of early economic evaluation to be applied by product developers within the health technology sector. The main premise of the work was to build the health economic profile of a new device in the very early stages of development, and thereby to ground product development decisions in the potential value a medical device could offer the health service. 

As a research fellow, Amanda is involved in health technology assessment of medical devices, and works on various projects commissioned by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).  She continues to have a strong research interest in methods of early economic evaluation, and in engaging with industry to optimise product development decisions.
