The Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Birmingham is once again offering its very successful programme of  Subject Support Days for teachers of Classics.   This programme is aimed at the following groups (but not restricted to them):

  • Trainee teachers of Classics on School Direct, School Direct (salaried), SCITT and Teach First programmes;
  • Newly qualified teachers (NQTs) of Classics;
  • Teachers of Classics in their second and third years of teaching;
  • Teachers keen to run Classics in their schools who may not yet have established programmes

Course details:

The days will run from 10.00am to 3.30 pm  on six Saturdays across the year on the University of Birmingham's Edgbaston campus, as follows:

  • 11 October 2014
  • 29 November 2014
  • 10 January 2015
  • 7 February 2015
  • 14 March 2015
  • 9 May 2015

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss a range of aspects of teaching Classics, from the practical (e.g. an experienced teacher’s advice on how to plan, budget and run a successful Classics trip) to the technical (workshops on the A-level and GSCE texts, teaching the Cambridge Latin Course, and on the different exam boards). Sessions are led by academics and by experienced Classics teachers. The opening lecture is given by Professor Chris Pelling, the closing session is led by Caroline Lawrence, author of the Roman Mysteries.

Cost: £250 for all six days, including lunch and refreshments, and a field trip to Chedworth Roman Villa. Thanks to the generous support of the Classical Association and the Ferreras Willetts Family we are able to offer at least 12 full bursaries to teachers and trainee teachers in maintained schools. If you work in a maintained school, and wish to apply for a bursary, please contact the organiser Dr Elena Theodorakopoulos (e.m.theodorakopoulos@bham.ac.uk).

If you do not work or train in a maintained school and wish to book a place please use the online shop
