Module description:
This option focuses on representations of Greece and Rome in cinema and television as an aspect of the reception of classical antiquity in modern culture.
Students receive an introduction to theoretical approaches to film studies, and to the methods of classical reception studies.
Material will include films from the mid-20th century to today (e.g. ‘epic’ films such as Spartacus or, more recently Gladiator; avant-garde productions such as Fellini’s Satyricon; and TV series such as Rome).
