The Department of African Studies and Anthropology has almost 50 years’ experience and expertise in supporting students from all over the world… including Africa.
We offer both both undergraduate
programmes, relating to a broad range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary themes. We are a truly interdisciplinary department... many claim the accolade, but DASA’ degrees are really interdisciplinary! Despite our small size we punch above our weight and host many departmental student activities. Our staff are approachable and our aim is to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere for serious study.
We are interested in the whole of Africa, not just West Africa. At DASA you will have the opportunity to take specialist courses in particular regions, for example, South Africa, but you will also build up a comparative picture of the whole continent. Africa's long history of relations with Europe, the African diaspora in the Caribbean, and the continent's inextricable relationships with the Islamic world are also integral aspects of our course programme. We have a core of expertise in Africa: all our staff have lived and taught in Africa, and continue to carry out research there.
Ours is the only university department in the world to concentrate specifically on West Africa. If you are looking for consultations on cultural, social, political or legal matters, please contact us.
