Our ethos

DASA is a small department which welcomes students from wide variety of backgrounds. We are aware that many students apply to us without having studied either Africa or Anthropology at school.

For this reason we place a heavy emphasis on developing the skills and the interests that students bring with them, as well as stimulating their curiosity and providing a basis from which they can carry on acquiring new knowledge and skills after they graduate. We value enthusiasm, open-mindedness and initiative amongst our students.

As a dedicated department, we nurture the qualities that students bring with them, and we aim to train graduates who can think flexibly, empathise with a wide range of viewpoints, and communicate effectively (on paper, in person and through information technology), as well as offering potential employers an unusual knowledge-base that extends to parts of the world about which many other graduates will know very little.

We are proud of what we teach and how we teach it, and will be very happy to discuss this with anyone who would like to know more about our degree programmes. Please feel free to forward any enquiries to study-dasa-ug@contacts.bham.ac.uk
