Reaching Out from Higher Education: Using Research for Community Learning and Development

This eighteen month scheme trains a cohort of 21 postgraduate students and early career researchers to work alongside 7 partners from local museums and other cultural organisations, to use their research skills in the local community.

Participants will work in groups of three to create outreach programmes which both reflect the needs and agendas of community partners, and the research and training interests of the students. Before working with the cultural partners, participants will undergo a six-month training period, during which they will receive training from experts in public engagement at the University of Birmingham and education officers from the partner organisations.

Projects will culminate in a series of outreach events in the local community, designed by the students with advice from their host organisation, in line with the public engagement aims of each organisation.
