On Thursday 29 November, the University of Birmingham hosted a visit of 20 delegates from the Bureau of Civil Affairs of Guangzhou Municipality. Led by Deng Jianqing, Vice Director General of the Bureau, the visit was to learn about the role of non-governmental organisations in Britain. The event was organised by Professors Matthew Hilton and Nicholas Crowson, lead investigators on the Leverhulme-Trust Funded project, ‘NGOs in Britain’. At a workshop at the Third Sector Research Centre, Professors Hilton and Crowson spoke about the findings from their forthcoming monograph, The Politics of Expertise: How NGOs Shaped Modern Britain (Oxford UP, 2013). Professor Pete Alcock, Director of the TSRC followed with a presentation on the evolution of the ‘Big Society’ in Britain.
