PhD title: Family group portraits and the construction of identity within English provincial gentry 1557-1680
Supervisors: Dr Tara Hamling and Professor Richard Cust
PhD Modern History

Using the vernacular portraits of provincial family groups as its main source, this interdisciplinary research project will integrate the methodologies of art historians and archival historians to create a dynamic dialogue between the two approaches. In particular, it will cast new light on changing notions of gentility, aspects of familial piety and attitudes to death, representations of the ‘ideal’ family and the place of portraiture in the material culture of provincial gentry.
