I currently run the Historic Environment Conservation postgraduate course.
I studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic as well as Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge. I achieved my AMA whilst working at the Museum of London, and became a qualified teacher in 1996. I am a professional member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation.
After becoming an Associate of the Museums Association and a museum consultant in the 1970’s, I created a number of rural museums for, amongst others, the National Trust. Whilst working in Northern Ireland for 13 years, I compiled Buildings at Risk volumes for the Province, ran a Townscape Heritage Initiative project and was a member of the Historic Buildings Council.
I created the Mourne Homesteads project obtaining diverse funding to conserve and reuse vernacular buildings linked to heritage construction skills training. This project received an award from Europa Nostra and in 2008 achieved the international accolade of Best In Heritage.
On returning to England, I established a Building Preservation Trust, which completed the conservation of a Welsh non-conformist chapel. In 2005 I received a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship to study the maintenance of historic buildings in western & eastern Europe.
I manage the Ironbridge Institute’s postgraduate Historic Environment Conservation programme – acting both as lecturer and tutor.
I am researching elements of the industrial archaeology of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage site.
I am currently a member of the West Midlands Committee of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the English Heritage Historic Environment Forum and am Co-Editor of The Historic Environment : Policy and Practice.
