Septembers issue of British Archaeology features some of the work undertaken with SLR consulting at Bayston Hill Quarry Roman Road (Shropshire) by Dr Ben Gearey and BAE. The investigation involved the analysis of samples from a layer of brushwood from below a cobbled road surface which proved the routeway had originally been established in the Iron Age for the transportation of cattle. This challenges the notion that the Romans brought roads to Britain and that formal routeways were established prior to the conquest.
