At the heart of the heritage day was a guided walk led by, and with dramatic interludes by, staff and friends of Birmingham Archaeology. This led members of the public quite literally 'Down the Towpath of Time' back to a period when the canals were at the heart
of the Industrial Revolution in the Midlands and bargees, lock keepers, and guagemen relied upon the Birmingham Navigations for their livelihoods.
They also met with two of the master canal engineers of the period, James Brindley and Thomas Telford who's work and vision re-shaped Smethwick and the Black Country forever.
Other entertainment included Black Adder Morris who clogged their own traditional dances and the Birmingham Canal Navigations Volunteer Group who had displays of their written work, as well as Roses and Castles art demonstrations.
