The Ironbridge Institute undertakes a wide range of consultancy work.
Most of the 100 projects completed during the last decade have involved the study of buildings and landscapes through a combination of field recording and evaluation, and the examination of primary and secondary documentation. These evaluations often lead to policy recommendations and are presented in the form of illustrated reports. Computer databases can also be prepared.
The Institute is also able, in collaboration with Ironbridge Archaeology and Birmingham Archaeology, to undertake full recording programmes and, if appropriate, excavation work.
The following are themes of recent work:
-
Archaeological interpretation and presentation
-
Evaluating and recording areas of former and current industrial activity in response to pressure for land reclamation and development, including policy formulation for conservation and possible tourism use
-
Recommendations for listing and surveys in response to applications for listed building consent
-
Local Area surveys leading to the designation of, and policies for, the enhancement of conservation areas
-
Developer funded recording and evaluation projects through PPS5
-
Enhancement of sites and monuments records
-
Mediation between volunteers and contractors over a major canal restoration scheme
-
Preparation of cases for tentative World Heritage site applications
-
Archaeological surveys in advance of major development
