This module provides an introduction to the various components of Canadian constitutional law, and to the basic principles necessary to understanding and applying the provisions of the Constitution in Canadian legal practice. The topics covered includes:

  • The basic features of the Canadian legal and political system
  • The nature and sources of the Canadian constitution
  • Federalism and the distribution of powers between federal and provincial governments
  • The role of the judiciary (including general principles of interpretation)
  • The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms 
  • Aboriginal and treaty rights
