Module leader: Dr Bharat Malkani

Teaching and assessment (2014): Semester 2, Essay - 6,000 words

Module description:

This module considers the law and practice relating to the administration of the death penalty worldwide. We explore how international law has regulated the use of the death penalty, and has moved towards prohibition of the death penalty. We will assess how international law has affected the use of the death penalty worldwide. Particular attention will be paid to the experiences of the United States of America, and the history of the death penalty in the UK will be examined too.

The module explores the penological justifications for the death penalty, the legal and moral arguments against the death penalty, and how these arguments manifest themselves in law and practice.
