Il sessismo nella lingua italiana (Sexism in the Italian language) is an interdisciplinary, international conference to be held at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia on 30 March 2017, in conjunction with the University of Birmingham.

In 1987 the linguist Alma Sabatini published Il sessismo nella lingua italiana (Sexism in the Italian language), stimulating a debate on the connections between language and gender. What has happened or changed in Italy in the meanwhile? Bringing together linguists, jurists, and scholars in the field of politics and sociology, the conference aims to focus on this and to encourage new perspectives. The event is being run by Anna Lisa Somma, one of our doctoral researchers in Italian studies, and it benefits from the support of the Dante Alighieri Society of Birmingham as well.
