Exile Remains: Ways of Thinking, Writing and Re-membering Spanish Republican Exile (2007-08)

A British Academy funded project (£78,887) to develop an on-line database on the Spanish Republican exile. The database will contain information on Republican exiles and their activities and allow users to search and present the data in a range of formats. Project leaders Frank Lough and Helena Buffery have been working with a full-time research assistant (Manuel Pulido, Sept-Dec 2007; Fernando Larraz, Feb- 2008) and a web designer (Ash Searle) to design and produce the database, with further assistance from other members of the Centre.

Staging Exile, Migration and Diaspora in Hispanic Theatre and Performance Cultures (2008-10)

An AHRC funded project (£165,000) led by Dr Helena Buffery that aims to recover and represent the full range of representation of the experience of exile in theatrical and performance texts and paratexts, by contributing to the creation, updating and maintenance of the Centre’s bibliographical database and by bringing together key researchers on Spanish Exile theatre and performance, with a view to publishing an edited volume on Stages of Exile in 2009. The project aims to explore through a series of case studies the changing status of exile representation and production in Spanish theatre and performance cultures, as well as the effects of the continuing waves of exile, diaspora and migration on the current configuration of the Spanish stage, and to the ways in which identity is performed in the spaces of Hispanic culture.
