  • MPhil (Birmingham)
  • PhD (Birmingham)

Biography

I completed a BA in English & French at the University of Birmingham in 1993, followed by an MPhil in French in 1995 and a PhD on the work of Simone de Beauvoir in 2000, under the supervision of Professor Alex Hughes. I took up my post in 2001 after three years as a visiting lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton. I was Programme Lead for French at Birmingham between 2011 and 2015.

Teaching

I am involved in teaching across all years of the programme, particularly in modules focusing on employability skills for translators and careers in the language services industry. I deliver sessions on audio description as part of the Final Year of the Translation Studies pathway and co-deliver a module on our MA in Translation devoted to Multimodal Translation. I also lecture on the work of French writers and filmmakers, especially contemporary authors such as Amélie Nothomb and Nina Bouraoui. I am interested in the diverse technical innovations within writing by women authors, as well as questions surrounding the reception and marketing of their work.

In March 2020, I was awarded a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Research

I am the author of The Body in the Work of Simone de Beauvoir (Bern: Peter Lang, 2002), a study of the representation of gender and corporeality across Beauvoir's theoretical and fictional writings. I have published articles on the work of Simone de Beauvoir, A.S. Byatt, and Marie Redonnet.
